Baijnath Temple
800 Years of Stone & Devotion
Built in 1204 CE, the Baijnath Shiva temple is one of the finest examples of Nagara-style temple architecture in all of Himachal Pradesh — and it's only 20 minutes from Bir.
📍
Location
Baijnath town — 16 km from Bir.
⏰
Visiting Hours
Open from 6am to 8pm. Aarti at dawn and dusk is particularly beautiful.
🏛️
Architecture
Intricately carved stone shikhara (tower), sculpted panels depicting Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha, and the Navagrahas. The level of craft is extraordinary for its era.
📜
History
Constructed under two merchants, Ahuka and Manyuka. The original idol of Vaidyanath (Shiva as healer) is believed to be self-manifested (swayambhu).
🚗
Getting There
Auto-rickshaw, taxi, or the Kangra Toy Train — the station is a short walk from the temple.
RestTrail Tip
Visit during Mahashivratri if you're in Bir between February and March. The temple transforms — thousands of pilgrims, oil lamps, and chanting fill the complex through the night.
