Scenic Journey

Bir to Kangra Toy Train

India's Most Beautiful Heritage Railway

The Kangra Valley Railway has been winding through tea gardens, gorges, and Himalayan foothills since 1929. One of India's most scenic narrow-gauge journeys — and still running.

🚉
Route
Pathankot to Joginder Nagar — 163 km through the Kangra Valley. Board at Ahju station (nearest to Bir) or Baijnath.
Timings
Check IRCTC for current schedules. Trains run 2–3 times daily. Journey time from Ahju to Kangra is approximately 1.5–2 hours.
💰
Cost
₹30–80 for a second-class seat. Reserve in advance for weekends.
🏛️
Stops
Baijnath, Palampur, Kangra Fort, Kangra town, Dharamsala (Kangra station). Each worth a visit.
📷
What to Photograph
The train crossing the Banganga and Uhl rivers, tea estate gradients, the Dhauladhar framed through narrow windows.
🎒
The Experience
The train is slow (20–30 km/h on average), old, and absolutely wonderful. Bring snacks. Talk to locals. Let it take as long as it takes.
RestTrail Tip

Book the window seat on the mountain side (ask at the station). Take the morning train — afternoon often gets hazy. The bridge crossings alone are worth the journey.
