Sherab Ling Monastery

A Seat of Kagyu Buddhism in the Himalayas

Sherab Ling is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet — a place of golden stupas, butter lamps, and a stillness that is almost impossible to describe.

📍
Location
Bhattu village, 6 km from Bir. A short auto or taxi ride.
Visiting Hours
Open daily from 6am to 6pm. Morning prayers (7–8am) are especially atmospheric.
💰
Entry
Free. Donations welcome.
🧘
What to Do
Attend the morning puja, walk the kora (circumambulation path), visit the main prayer hall and the tall golden stupa built by Tai Situ Rinpoche.
👗
Dress Code
Modest dress required. Remove shoes before entering any temple. Silence is appreciated in the prayer halls.
📷
Photography
Permitted in outer areas and around the stupa. Ask before photographing monks or interiors.
RestTrail Tip

Visit at dawn on a clear day. The butter lamps are still burning, the monks are chanting, and the Dhauladhar peaks are lit in first light behind the golden stupa. Nothing quite compares.
